Filling a Need for Development on Industrial Wasteland

Situated in the shadow of Cleveland, BrewDog offers visitors a unique perspective of downtown through a vintage lens. The surrounding area, once home to the thriving Jim’s Steak House and other establishments, has transformed into an industrial wasteland in need of revitalization. However, BrewDog has taken up the mantle of transformation, breathing new life into the neighborhood.

Jen MacFarlane, a member of the brewery team, expressed her satisfaction with the space, stating, “I think the space has worked really well. It’s about making it cozy.” The brewery has successfully achieved an atmosphere that can be best described as “industrial cozy.” This ambiance is brought to life through elements such as red neon signs, green living walls, plush brown couches, and fire pits that provide literal warmth. Brew Dog has managed to strike a balance where the industrial backdrop coexists harmoniously with a welcoming and comfortable interior.

Stepping outside, patrons can enjoy their beer while gazing toward the picturesque Cuyahoga River. The outdoor seating area, spanning 10,000 square feet, is adorned with string lights and offers a range of seating options, some of which are covered for added comfort. Inside the brewpub, the original architectural features have been thoughtfully preserved, with exposed concrete columns and brick walls serving as reminders of the building’s rich history. The presence of graffiti in select areas, from beams to the entryway, adds an additional layer of character and authenticity to the space. On a Saturday night, the air is filled with the enticing aroma of mulled cider and brewing ingredients, while patrons engage in friendly games of shuffleboard and enjoy the various board games stacked nearby.
