On June 19th, 2016, we finally, as Cleveland fans, were able to exhale and enjoy the sweet fruits of victory. The Cleveland Cavaliers came back down 3-1 to beat the Golden State Warriors to win the NBA Championship, and it was an incredible feeling as a fan.
That game ended 52 years of grief, and Cleveland, Ohio, the city we love so much and pride ourselves in, exploded in celebration. Men, women, and even children were running up Euclid, honking their horns on Huron and dancing on Prospect as the Cleveland Cavaliers gave us so much joy. Everybody cried that night….everybody!
I was in downtown Cleveland that Father’s Day Sunday as I was filming the new ending for the 30 for 30 documentary, “Believeland.” As I was walking around the city, the buzz, excitement, and anticipation before the game was so electric. To actually see people stand outside in an open-ended garage in downtown just to be a part of it speaks to how important the moment.
The leader and main reason why the Cavaliers won the championship, northeast Ohio native LeBron James, should always be praised and thanked for what he did. The amount of pressure he had to feel of not only winning the title but being from Akron and winning a championship for the city of Cleveland to lift the entire community had to be so stressful for James, hence the emotion he showed after the final horn sounded. He and the 2016 team should have a statue, and James should be thanked for all that he did for the city as he lifted the spirits and economics during his tenure for the Cavs.
There have been many games prior, and since that game seven, there has never been a more important victory or moment for Cleveland. Never forget the 2016 NBA Championship!
