So far, it has been made clear from the reporting on the ground and from coaches that the Browns defense is winning overall regarding one-on-one drills.
There are two ways to look at this. One way is that the defense is improved, which is true. Jim Schwartz, along with the new additions, has brought a lot of energy to the defensive side of the ball. From videos and quotes from the Browns players and staff, one can tell the Browns defense has a far different edge than last year, which is excellent and exciting.
The other half is to wonder and or worry that Deshaun Watson will have minimal improvement this coming season, and we are seeing early signs of it in training camp. Seeing Watson throw an interception to rookie Cameron Mitchell is not easy to watch on video.
It is just one throw in practice, but with the defense ruling camp, it makes a mind wonder what will happen in the regular season with the offense, particularly Watson.
If there’s a clear standout in camp so far, the award goes to WR Elijah Moore. Offensive Coordinator Alex Van Pelt on Moore “I thought Elijah had an outstanding camp,” Van Pelt said. “He’s a guy that can do a lot of things, very skilled receiver inside, outside, can do stuff out of the backfield. That was impressive to see.”
A lot of praise for the young wide receiver throughout camp.
It will be quarterback Kellen Mond and rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson handling duties under center. The note that caught my attention is that we will see backup running back Jerome Ford on Thursday. I’m anxious to see Ford play, as he will be on the field quite a bit this coming season, backing up Nick Chubb.
