Cavs/Knicks Playoff Series Preview

April 14, 2023

Todd Hall

Bold prediction for the series.

The upcoming 4-5 first-round NBA Playoff matchup in the Eastern Conference involves two highly compelling teams. The New York Knicks are a respected and established franchise on the rise, while the Cleveland Cavaliers are a young and talented team that seems to be peaking at the perfect moment.

This playoff series has the potential to be extremely entertaining, and I will make three bold predictions before concluding with my series pick for Knicks-Cavs.

Bold prediction No. 1:

Donovan Mitchell will demonstrate his worth as a No. 1 option. Last offseason, the Cavs took a risk by acquiring Donovan Mitchell in a high-profile trade. Although he had the potential to become a superstar, he had not yet been universally recognized as one. However, throughout the regular season, Mitchell has demonstrated that he was worth the gamble for Cleveland.

We predict that this trend will continue in the NBA Playoffs. I find it puzzling that some teams were hesitant to offer everything for Mitchell. He has shown in the past that he can serve as a No. 1 option, and I believe he will do so again, especially against the Knicks, who also came close to acquiring him.

Mitchell’s outstanding performance in the first round against the Knicks will further solidify the Cavs’ bright future.

Bold prediction No. 2:

Evan Mobley will be the top-performing big man in this series. This statement holds weight, given that there are other talented big men on both the Cavs and Knicks rosters. Jarrett Allen has been a solid contributor for the Cavs, while the Knicks have Mitchell Robinson, Obi Toppin, and Julius Randle (if he performs to his potential).

However, when Mobley is playing at his peak, he outshines them all. His impact on the game extends beyond the defensive end, making him a valuable asset on the Cavs’ offense as well.

Mobley’s performance has only improved throughout the season, particularly in March, where he averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks with a 58% field goal percentage. This playoff series presents an excellent opportunity for Mobley to demonstrate his talent to the rest of the league. My prediction is that he will make a significant impact in this series.

Bold prediction No. 3:

The outcome of this first-round series between the Knicks and the Cavs will primarily be determined by the team’s defensive performance, despite the presence of several offensive stars. If this holds true, the Cavs will have a significant advantage heading into the series as they finished the regular season with the best defensive rating in the league.

The Knicks, on the other hand, struggled on defense throughout the season and ended up with a 19th-ranked defensive rating. However, New York’s offense finished in the top five, which will provide an excellent challenge for Cleveland’s top defense.

Julius Randle’s availability is a crucial factor to consider. If he is healthy and able to play, he can potentially change the course of the series. But if he is out, the Cavs will face one less offensive weapon to prepare for.

Regardless, the team that performs the best on the defensive end of the floor is likely to advance to the conference semifinals. This aspect of the game is crucial, and both teams need to be at their best defensively to secure a victory.

Series Prediction: Cavs in 7

In my opinion, the first-round NBA playoff matchup between the Knicks and Cavs is one of the most captivating matchups in the Eastern Conference, and it’s my personal favorite. Although either team has a chance to win, I think the Cavs are better positioned to advance than the Knicks, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding Julius Randle’s status.

Both teams are young and on the rise, with the potential to remain in the top five of the conference for years to come. It’s unfortunate that one of them will be eliminated so early in the playoffs and that this series is taking place in the first round. Nonetheless, this matchup has the potential to be extremely engaging and could easily steal the spotlight.

Overall, I believe that the Cavs are currently a step ahead of the Knicks in their development. This may be due in part to the fact that the Cavs already have their established superstar, whereas the Knicks have yet to solidify theirs.
