1 – Bibee
Tanner Bibee struggled on Friday night going only five innings giving up six runs on eight hits.
2 – Hitting woes
The Guardians could only muster six hits, with Steven Kwan leading the way with two singles. Cleveland’s six hits on Friday were all singles.
3 – Bullpen
The bullpen did have a great game, going four innings strong and not giving up a run on three hits.
In a commanding performance, José Soriano secured his inaugural victory as a starting pitcher by tossing six shutout innings, while Mickey Moniak’s three-run homer fueled the Los Angeles Angels to a resounding 6-0 triumph over the Cleveland Guardians on Friday evening.
Soriano, who previously only saw action as a reliever, exhibited mastery on the mound, conceding just five hits throughout the game. The right-hander faced a significant challenge in the fifth inning, skillfully navigating out of a bases-loaded situation by striking out Andrés Giménez.
Remarkably, both of Soriano’s career wins have come against Cleveland. Amir Garrett contributed one inning, and José Suarez closed out the final two frames, combining for a six-hit shutout for LA.
Nolan Schanuel launched a homer, and Willie Calhoun delivered three hits for the Angels, who clinched only their third victory in their last 25 visits to Progressive Field.
Moniak’s pivotal homer, struck with two outs in the fourth inning off Tanner Bibee (2-1), propelled the Angels to a commanding 5-0 lead. Calhoun and Logan O’Hoppe added back-to-back doubles earlier in the inning to set the stage.
During a critical moment, with two outs and the bases occupied, Bibee walked Ehire Adrianza. Before the Guardians’ pitching coach Carl Willis could even settle in after a mound visit, Moniak crushed the first pitch over the right-center wall.
A sacrifice fly by Taylor Ward in the fifth inning extended the Angels’ lead to six runs.
Cleveland’s offense struggled, enduring its third shutout of the season. After a strong start, winning 19 of their first 28 games, the Guardians have now stumbled, losing four of their last five outings.
Schanuel, who has been consistently hitting in 12 of his last 13 games, engaged Bibee in a marathon 11-pitch battle in the first inning before grounding out. However, he wasted no time in the third inning, launching a homer on Bibee’s first offering. The Angels continue their streak, having hit at least one homer in 27 of their last 32 games.
