1 – Jose Jose Jose
Jose Ramirez had a huge night hitting three home runs for the first time in his career, and also passing the 200 home run mark, at 201 after tonight, making Jose 9th all-time in Cleveland’s history.
2 – 5 run 6th
The Guardians broke the game open with a 5-run 6th inning that started with of course a Ramirez home run. Cleveland hit for the cycle in the 6th getting eight straight base hits off of former Cleveland ace Corey Kluber. Everybody in the lineup tonight for the Guards got at least one hit.
3 – Civale Aaron
Civale had a good start going 5 2/3 innings while only giving up two runs. Civale’s ERA is now at 2.31 for the season in four starts and a record of 2-1.
On Thursday night, José Ramírez showcased an extraordinary display of power, hitting home runs in his first three at-bats for the Cleveland Guardians against the Boston Red Sox. What made it even more impressive was that he achieved this feat from both sides of the plate. Ramírez began with a solo shot off Matt Dermody in the first inning, followed by a two-run homer in the third, marking his 200th career home run. He didn’t stop there and added another solo blast in the sixth inning when the Guardians were on fire, hitting for the cycle, securing eight consecutive hits, and scoring five runs.
Ramírez had a chance to achieve a rare four-homer game in the sixth inning but unfortunately struck out swinging. He had another opportunity in the eighth but grounded out to third base. Since 1901, there have only been 16 instances of a player hitting four home runs in a single game, with the last occurrence by Arizona’s J.D. Martinez in 2017. Rocky Colavito accomplished this feat for Cleveland on June 10, 1959.
Aside from his offensive prowess, Ramírez also displayed his defensive skills in the sixth inning by making a remarkable backhanded play on Justin Turner’s hard-hit ball. While backpedaling in foul territory, Ramírez threw off balance across the diamond to get Boston’s third baseman.
The Guardians sealed their series victory and handed the Red Sox their fifth loss in six games, with Will Brennan also contributing a home run. Aaron Civale, who recently returned from the injured list, delivered another strong performance on the mound for Cleveland. After a 46-game absence due to an oblique strain, Civale pitched five scoreless innings against the Minnesota Twins in his previous outing. He continued his impressive form against the Red Sox, keeping them off the scoreboard until the fifth inning when Reese McGuire hit an RBI double.
Triston Casas managed to hit a home run off Civale in the sixth inning, narrowing Boston’s deficit to 3-2. However, Cleveland’s offense, which had been slow to start, exploded against their former teammate Corey Kluber in the sixth. Following Ramírez’s home run, Andrés Giménez hit a two-run double, Myles Straw added an RBI triple, and Will Brennan hit a home run, allowing the Guardians to surge to an 8-2 lead.
Kluber, who had recently been moved to the bullpen, endured a rough outing, giving up seven runs and 11 hits in just 3 1/3 innings. Dermody’s first major league start was not without controversy. It was revealed that he had posted a homophobic tweet in 2021, which he later deleted. The Red Sox were unaware of this tweet when they signed Dermody in January. He did participate in the team’s mandatory anti-discrimination and harassment prevention training in March. The team described Dermody’s post as “hurtful,” and manager Alex Cora commended the club’s handling of the situation.
