Game 1 of 3 Against the Kansas City Royals

3 Things Preview Cleveland Guardians vs. Royals:

1 – First meeting

The Guardians and Royals meet for the first time in the 2023 season.  Cleveland was 12-7 against KC in 2022 and Jose Ramirez had 21 RBIs and 1.037 OPS against the Royals in 2022.

2 – Rookie looking for a W

Gavin Williams is looking for his first-ever MLB win tonight as he is on the bump.  The Royals have right-handed Brady Singer and his 6.34 ERA on the mound.

3 – Twins and standings

Coming into tonight’s game the Twins and Guards are tied once again in the loss column.  The Twins have a hard week as they are in Atlanta and then head to Baltimore.  Good opportunity for the Guards to pass the Twins in the standings.

Guardians Notes

On Tuesday, Gavin Williams will be making his second career start. During his MLB debut last week, Williams encountered some difficulties, giving up four runs, including a home run, in 5.2 innings against the Athletics. Despite this, the Guardians won the game, and Williams received a no-decision. As a rookie, he had impressive stats in the minor leagues, boasting a remarkable 2.39 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP, and a 4-2 record over 60 innings. Undoubtedly, Williams is highly regarded as the top prospect for the Guardians.

In this game, Cleveland embarks on a six-game road trip. They swept the A’s in a three-game series last week but struggled at home against the Brewers this week, losing two out of three games and managing to score only nine runs in the entire series. The Guardians find themselves in the hunt for the AL Central division, trailing by a mere two games. In their most recent ten matchups, they have achieved a 6-4 record.

Jose Ramirez continues to be the driving force behind the team’s offense, showcasing his exceptional skills this month. In June alone, the 30-year-old star has amassed an impressive 17 RBIs and a remarkable 1.06 OPS. His outstanding performance adds to his season totals of 46 RBIs and an impressive .872 OPS. It’s worth noting that Ramirez had an extraordinary display against the Royals last season, collecting a mind-blowing 21 RBIs and an astonishing 1.037 OPS.

As for Cleveland’s overall performance, they are currently averaging 3.92 runs per game, placing them 17th in the league. On the pitching side, the team’s staff has been solid with a 3.84 ERA, earning them the eighth spot in the league rankings.

Royals Notes

Brady Singer is set to take the mound, hoping for a better performance this time around. In his previous outing against the Tigers, Singer struggled, giving up five runs and suffering a loss. The young right-hander has been unable to find his rhythm and often struggles with command. His season statistics reflect this, with an unsightly 6.34 ERA, a 1.57 WHIP, and a 4-7 record in 76.2 innings pitched. He has also issued 29 walks. Singer’s track record against Cleveland is less than stellar, with a 4.88 ERA and a 2-1 record in 48 career innings.

The Royals’ pitching has been a major downfall for the team. They have failed to win a series all month, but they did manage to gather some momentum by winning two out of four road games against the formidable Rays over the weekend, despite allowing 23 runs in the series. Their performance in the last ten games has been lackluster, with a 4-6 record.

Amidst the struggles, Maikel Garcia has been a standout player, hitting .299 with a solid .769 OPS this month. The rookie has contributed 18 RBIs and holds a .720 OPS in 45 games this season. This will be his first career game against Cleveland. Unfortunately, Vinnie Pasquantino is sidelined for the rest of the season.

The Royals’ offense has struggled, averaging only 3.78 runs per game, ranking them 28th in the league. The pitching staff has also been a weak point, sporting a team ERA of 5.21, which puts them at 28th as well.

Royals Stats and Insights

ROYALS PROBABLE PITCHER – Brady Singer RHP

  • 2023 home splits: 2-4, 5.84 ERA (44 2/3 IP, 29 ER – 6 HR) with a .291 OBA in 9 starts

ROYALS HITTING TRENDS

  • Kansas City has a team batting average of .234 this season, which ranks 23rd among MLB teams.
  • The Royals have an OBP of just .298 this season, which ranks 28th in MLB.
  • Kansas City ranks 24th in strikeouts per game (9.1) among MLB offenses.
  • They’ve hit 40 homers, an average of 1.1 per game, in 38 home contests this season.
  • Kansas City is slugging .399 in 38 home games this season.
  • In home games this season, they’re batting .241 with 8.1 base hits per contest.

Final Thoughts/Pick

The Cleveland Guardians are building some strong momentum, securing victories in five out of their previous seven games. On the other hand, the Kansas City Royals are enduring a disastrous season and have struggled even on their home turf, losing seven out of their last ten games.

Adding to the Guardians’ advantage, their starting pitcher Gavin Williams holds significant promise as the organization’s top prospect, with the potential to become an ace. Cleveland has a reputation for excelling in the development of pitchers. In contrast, the Royals’ starter, Brady Singer, lacks reliability on the mound. In his recent outing against the Tigers, he allowed five runs, and his career ERA against the Guardians stands at a disappointing 4.88.

Considering the Guardians’ recent performance, we suggest considering the run line as an option. In the past ten victories for the Guardians, seven have been achieved by a margin of two or more runs.

Our Pick: Take the Guardians and the Run Line -1.5
