The New York Yankees and the Cleveland Guardians continue their three-game series on Tuesday night in Cleveland. The Guardians won game one of the series on Monday night to improve to 7-4 on the season while the Yankees fell to 6-4 with the loss. The Yankees will send ace Gerrit Cole (2-0, 0.73) to the mound to oppose Guardians righty Hunter Gaddis (0-0, 3.72). The opening pitch is scheduled for 6:10 PM EST.
Guardians Notes
The Guardians will try to keep their win streak alive on Tuesday night with righty Gaddis taking the hill. The big right-hander has started two games on the season with mixed results. In his first start, Gaddis went six innings and allowed just one hit and no runs in an eventual 6-4 Guardians win over Oakland. In his second start, Gaddis lasted just 3.2 innings while allowing five hits and four runs in the 9-4 Guardians’ win over the Mariners. Gaddis has been moved into the starting rotation following the news that starter Triston Mackenzie will miss at least two months with a shoulder injury.
Key Injuries: Starting pitchers Mackenzie and Aaron Civale are both on the IL.
Yankee’s Notes
The Yankees hope to knot the series at one apiece on Tuesday with ace Cole on the hill. Cole is off to an outstanding start with two wins and an ERA of just 0.75. He has thrown 12.1 innings and allowed just six hits, one run and struck out 19 batters thus far this season. Last year on the road, Cole was 8-3 on the road in 17 starts with a 3.81 ERA. He allowed 76 hits in 99.1 innings pitched and struck out 121 batters. Cole was 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA in two starts against the Guardians and followed that up with two wins against them in the playoffs.
Key Injuries: SS Oswald Peraza is day-to-day
The Yankees turn to Cole on Tuesday night and the trends certainly steer toward the Yankees. Cole was 2-0 against the Guardians in the regular season last year and followed that up with two dominant starts in the AL Divisional round. He has gotten off to a strong start this year, with two straight wins and 19 strikeouts in 12.1 innings pitched. Cleveland’s offense is predicated on long at-bats and base running. Cole’s ability to get swings and misses will keep the Guardians off the base paths. Meanwhile, Gaddis takes the mound for Cleveland and is not the swing-and-miss pitcher that Cole is. Gaddis is a contact pitcher and will struggle against this powerful Yankees’ lineup. We can see the Yankee’s get back on track with the long ball against Gaddis and pull away for a series-tying win in game two of the series.
