There are no excuses with the Rockies in town. Guards need to take two out of three at the minimum, as Colorado is your classic bottom basement club.
Colorado will have left-handed starter Austin Comber making that four straight lefties that have started against Cleveland. That usually means Oscar Gonzalez will be in the lineup and another night of sitting on the pine for Will Brennan. Brennan has been off to a good start, and I am concerned that he is not getting the at-bats that he is needing. Would love to see Brennan in the lineup.
On Sunday, we saw one thru six getting on base and contributing to the seven runs for our Guards. This is a reversal from the norm in 2023, as the bottom of the lineup has been impacting games more than the top hitters. In particular, it was great seeing Rosario have a big day, and Naylor getting two more hits warms the heart.
After being hit by a line drive while recording the final out of the bottom of the sixth inning in his last outing against the Tigers on Wednesday, Quantrill threw a season-low 83 pitches and was lifted. Quantrill has started in four games this season, earning a record of 1-1 with an ERA of 4.15. He has given up 13 hits in 21.2 innings pitched, resulting in a WHIP of 1.43, which is higher than his career average of 1.23. Unfortunately, Quantrill has allowed a significant amount of hard contact this season, with an average exit velocity of 89.3, which is two points higher than his career average. His hard hit % of 38.5 is a career-high, and his K% of 13.4 is a career low. In his six appearances against the Rockies, Quantrill has a record of 1-1, with a K/9 rate of just 5.14.
On Monday night, the Rockies will have left-handed pitcher Austin Gomber starting the game. Gomber has struggled to pitch deep into games, managing to do so only once this season in his debut start. In his most recent three starts, he has allowed a whopping 22 hits and 19 runs across just 10.1 innings pitched. Additionally, Gomber has already given up five home runs while only striking out 12 and walking nine batters. Notably, Gomber’s hard-hit percentage is at a career-high of 39.7%, and his K% is at a career-low of 14%.
