Three Observations Heading Into the Bye This Weekend

1 – The Growth of McCord

The transformation of QB Kyle McCord from the first two games to his final drive at South Bend was a remarkable moment for the young quarterback.  What is also great is McCord plays with poise in the pocket.  McCord does not get rattled by pressure and can distribute to the star receivers of Emeka Egbuka and Marvin Harrison Jr.

The best part is that he is steadily improving each game, which makes me believe that McCord has not hit his ceiling.  The best is yet to come for McCord.

2 – The Rebirth of TreVeyon Henderson

After the opener against IU, RB TreVeyon Henderson has ripped off three games in a row where Henderson looks like his formal self in 2021.  Last Saturday against the Irish, Henderson’s 61-yard touchdown run in the third quarter was a huge moment in the game and shows that not only is he putting up big numbers but in a spotlighted game he shows up.  Henderson had 104 yards on 14 carries on Saturday.

With the Buckeyes having Henderson back, this gives another weapon to the already loaded Ohio State offense.

3 – Buckeyes Defense

The Ohio State defense looks legit four games in with only giving up four touchdowns so far in 2023.  They also rank 6th overall in defense according to the NCAA.  Even more, no big plays being given up by the Buckeyes which is a huge leap for this team.  Against the Irish, they gave up two touchdowns but forced Notre Dame to take long drives to get into the endzone.

Overall

Head Coach Ryan Day is feeling good heading to the bye week for sure, but more importantly, what is exciting for him and Buckeye nation is I don’t believe this team has yet hit their ceiling or is even close to doing so.  The way Ohio State keeps improving each game, along with the big play ability on offense with a growing quarterback and a defense that looks like it has learned from 2022 big play errors, a national championship is very possible.
