Guards Have Yet to Win a Game on Tuesday This Season

3 Things: Guards and White Sox Game 2

1 – Sunshine

Former Indians pitcher Mike Clevinger is on the bump tonight for the White Sox.  Clevinger was traded back in August 2020 to San Diego, and Cleveland received a haul of players, including Josh NaylorCal Quantrill, and Gabriel Arias, to name a few.

2 – HELP WANTED – Catcher

So far in the month of May, Cleveland catchers are batting .000.  YEP, BIG FAT ZERO!  Have we mentioned the struggles behind the plate?  Lordy.

3 – Rosario

Not quite Super Rosario all the time, but Amed Rosario is having a good seven-game stretch with 12 hits that included two doubles and two triples.  He has raised his average by 40 points to .262.

Guardians Notes

It’s Wednesday, time for me to share the outcome of last night’s game involving the Guardians. Unfortunately, they suffered a loss. Surprisingly, the White Sox, whose starting pitcher had a high 7.51 ERA, played exceptional defense and easily defeated our lackluster Cleveland Guardians.

During the game, Josh Naylor sustained an injury, and it appears unlikely that he will be able to play today. This adds to the lineup’s woes as they are already missing Jose Ramirez, who was placed on the bereavement list yesterday. To fill Ramirez’s spot, Brayan Rocchio was called up to the team.

The silver lining in the game was that Rocchio achieved his first MLB hit. Interestingly, the hit only traveled a distance of 2 feet and had an exit velocity of 53.9 mph. It may not have been a powerful hit, but it was a perfect fit for the situation.

Guards Stats and Insights

GUARDIANS PROBABLE PITCHER – Peyton Battenfield

  • Battenfield (0-4 with a 4.45 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings pitched) makes the start for the Guardians, his sixth of the season.
  • The righty last appeared on Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers, when he tossed six innings, allowing four earned runs while giving up seven hits.
  • Battenfield is seeking his third straight outing lasting five or more innings. He averages 5.0 innings per start.
  • The Guardians were named the money line underdog for two Battenfield starts this season — they lost both.
  • Battenfield’s five starts have all ended in a loss for his team this season.
  • Battenfield has started five games with a set total this season. His team has not hit the over in any of them.

GUARDIANS HITTING TRENDS

  • They are 4-1 this season when they hit two or more home runs in a game.
  • In seven games with five or more extra-base hits this season, it has a record of 3-4.
  • They have won 11 of the 21 games in which they’ve collected eight or more hits this season.
  • Cleveland has a 9-2 record this season when scoring five or more runs in a game.
  • In 14 games this season with five or more walks drawn, they’ve posted a record of 8-6

White Sox Notes

Lynn displayed flawless performance during the initial three innings of Tuesday night’s game, while Bieber managed to keep the opposing team from scoring as the bottom of the fifth inning approached. With only two outs remaining in the frame, it seemed like the game would maintain a scoreless tie.

However, as Luis Robert Jr. swung at a pitch within the strike zone, Cleveland’s catcher Mike Zunino unintentionally obstructed the trajectory with his mitt hand, resulting in a catcher’s interference call that extended the inning.

Capitalizing on this opportunity, the White Sox launched an impressive offensive onslaught with six consecutive two-out hits, causing them to secure a commanding six-run lead and forcing Bieber out of the game. Notably, this rally included remarkable home runs from Jake Burger and Gavin Sheets. Subsequently, the Chicago team managed to score only two more runs for the remainder of the game following this pivotal inning.

White Sox Stats and Insights

WHITE SOX PROBABLE PITCHER – Mike Clevinger

  • Clevinger and his team have a record of 3-5-0 against the spread when he starts.
  • The right-hander’s last appearance was on Thursday, when he threw six innings against the Kansas City Royals, giving up three earned runs while allowing three hits.
  • Clevinger has pitched five or more innings in four straight games and will look to extend that streak.
  • Clevinger’s team won his only start as a favorite this season.
  • Clevinger’s team has a 3-5 record in his starts this season.
  • Games Clevinger has started this season hit the over three times in eight chances.

WHITE SOX HITTING TRENDS

  • The White Sox have hit two or more homers in 17 games this season, and are 6-11 in those outings.
  • Chicago is 5-3 in games this season when it has had at least five extra-base hits.
  • The team has put up eight or more hits in 27 games this season and is 14-13 in those contests.
  • Chicago is 9-5 in games this season when it scored at least five runs.
  • The White Sox have drawn at least five walks in six games this season, and are 2-4 in those contests.

Final Thoughts

The White Sox are a bad home team and the Guardians are a solid road team, with a 10-10 road record on the season. Recent matchups between these teams have been fairly even, with each team winning 5 of the last 10 meetings. However, the Guardians are 3-1 in the last 4 meetings and have a slight edge heading into Wednesday.

The over/under on this game, today is 9. The Under is 5-0 in Cleveland’s last 5 Wednesday games and 5-0 in Battenfield’s 5 career starts on grass. The Under is also 6-2-2 in Cleveland’s last 10 overall.

The Under is 5-1-1 in Chicago’s last 7 games and 4-1 in their last 5 games overall.

Guess what we are recommending if you are a gambling sort of person!
