five shutout innings, only making 65 pitches along the way, which made
him getting pulled a bit odd, but still a victory for Cleveland.
Ben Lively secured his fifth consecutive win as José Ramirez and Steven Kwan hit home runs, leading the Cleveland Guardians to an 8-0 victory over the Miami Marlins on Saturday night.
Lively (6-2) allowed just three hits, walked none, and struck out one, bringing his ERA down to 2.59. Sam Hentges pitched the sixth inning, and Pedro Avila closed the four-hitter to earn his first major league save, marking Cleveland’s seventh shutout of the season.
“Throw strikes, throw competitive pitches, keep them in and out, and use my fastball more than I ever have,” Lively said about his recent success.
Josh Naylor contributed with two hits and two RBIs for the AL Central-leading Guardians (41-22).
Miami, the NL’s worst team at 22-42, has lost five of their last six games. The Marlins managed only four hits or fewer for the ninth time this season and moved just two runners into scoring position.
Roddery Muñoz (1-2), called up from Triple-A Jacksonville, gave up four runs, five hits, and five walks in four-plus innings.
Ramirez hit his 18th home run in the first inning and currently leads the majors with 61 RBIs. Naylor added an RBI single in the third inning, and Cleveland blew the game open with a six-run fifth inning.
The extended 28-minute half inning allowed Lively to take the mound in the fifth with a larger lead but also after a long break. Manager Stephen Vogt decided to pull him after 65 pitches.
“That long inning made him a little tight,” Vogt said. “He went out and felt fine, but when he came back in, he felt tight. In a game like that, where he had sat for that long, we felt it was smart to take him out.”
Kwan chased Muñoz with a two-run homer, Naylor singled in another run off Declan Cronin, and David Fry added an RBI double. Kyle Manzardo contributed a sacrifice fly, and Will Brennan added a run-scoring single.
“With two strikes, I just try to spoil the pitch and see another one,” Kwan said.
Marlins infielder Emmanuel Rivera pitched the ninth inning, allowing one hit. He threw 11 pitches, with the fastest clocked at 85.2 mph.
