A lot of opinions in Browns fandom about the selection of UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson (DTR) 5th round pick. Here is our take on the selection:
DTR is a pure developmental selection for the Browns, as Josh Dobbs is clearly number two behind Watson. I do like DTR over Kellen Mond, currently the Browns third-string behind Dobbs, as I believe DTR can develop into an NFL backup. Not as confident about Mond doing the same.
Some fans on social media became outraged with the selection, saying it was a wasted pick with Deshawn Watson in charge. In the NFL, developing talent into a position on the field down the line, especially at quarterback, is never a bad idea. To groom DTR to be a backup behind Watson someday will help with the cap and possibly be a trade chip to another team needing a quarterback.
The NFL Draft, at the end of the day, is a lot of speculation, so keep that in mind, especially at the position of quarterback. It is very hard to guess who can play quarterback in this league, and often people get it wrong. Nothing is a sure thing at QB, as we all know far too well, so having another option is always a plus.
