Cal Quantrill is on the bump today for the Guards. He will be looking to bounce back as in his last two starts he has logged 9.2 IP giving up 9 earned, not good.
Even though he has not found his groove at the plate, Gabriel Arias looks the part in the field. Arias had multiple great defensive plays at third base. It will be interesting to see if Tyler Freeman gets some at-bats this week, but as of now, it looks like Francona wants to give Arias a serious look.
Guardians will try to win three in a row today in Baltimore. The last time the Guards won three in a row in 2023 was the opening week when Cleveland won four in a row from March 31st thru April 3rd.
In the first game, Cleveland took care of business, shutting out the Orioles with a 5-0 victory. Logan Allen, the starting pitcher for the Guardians, delivered an impressive performance, allowing only three hits in seven innings while achieving a career-high of ten strikeouts. Currently, Cleveland is three games behind the first-place team in the AL Central division.
The Guardians have struggled offensively in the 2023 season, averaging 3.45 runs per game (ranking 29th), with a batting average of .227 (ranking 28th) and a .638 OPS (ranking 30th). They have hit 30 home runs (ranking 30th) but have shown strength in their base-stealing abilities with 46 stolen bases (ranking 4th). On the pitching side, the Cleveland staff has displayed a solid performance with a 3.69 ERA (ranking 6th) and a 1.24 WHIP (ranking 8th), featuring 26 quality starts.
Taking the mound for the Guardians in game two will be Quantrill, who aims to bounce back after surrendering six runs to the White Sox in his previous start.
In the series opener, Baltimore failed to score any runs, leaving seven runners stranded on base. Additionally, the Orioles faced a setback as outfielder Cedric Mullins had to leave the game in the eighth inning due to a groin injury.
During the 2023 season, the Orioles have averaged 4.91 runs per game (ranking 8th), with a batting average of .249 (ranking 15th) and a .742 OPS (ranking 11th). They have hit 64 home runs (ranking 11th) and stolen 45 bases (ranking 5th). On the pitching side, the Baltimore staff has maintained a 4.08 ERA (ranking 13th) and a 1.31 WHIP (ranking 17th), while delivering 17 quality starts.
Taking the mound for the home team on Tuesday night will be Gibson, a seasoned right-handed pitcher. In his recent start, he shut out the Yankees, allowing only two hits across seven innings. Gibson also performed well in his previous outing against Toronto, holding the Blue Jays to just one run on five hits in seven frames. Throughout the 2023 season, Gibson has maintained a 2:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
The Guardians have had a strong track record in recent meetings with the Orioles, winning 8 out of the last 11 matchups between the two teams. They have also performed well against teams with winning records, winning 5 out of their last 7 games in such situations. Additionally, they have a favorable record of 19-9 in their last 28 games after allowing two runs or less in their previous game.
On the other hand, the Orioles have struggled in certain scenarios, losing their last four games when their opponent has allowed two runs or less in their previous game. They have also faced difficulties in their last four home games when the total score is set between 7.0 and 8.5, losing all of them. Overall, they have a record of 1-4 in their last five home games.
Based on these factors, the Guardians should keep the winning streak going and win on Tuesday night. Quantrill has performed well in his last two starts against the Orioles, limiting them to two runs and four hits in a total of ten innings. He also secured a win in his only appearance against them last year. Aside from his most recent start, Quantrill has been in good form, allowing only eight runs in 26 innings against his previous four opponents.
While the Orioles may be considered the stronger team overall, they are currently facing some challenges. They have lost three out of their last four games and suffered an injury to Mullins on Monday. Although Gibson, the Orioles’ pitcher, hasn’t faced the Guardians in a few years, his career record against Cleveland is not impressive, with a 3-10 record and a 5.59 ERA in 21 appearances.
Considering these factors, we believe there is significant betting value in choosing the Guardians to win once again on Tuesday at Camden Yards.
Our Pick: Guardians ML.
