3 Observations from the game.

1 – Tanner Bibee 

Tanner Bibee was wonderful in his MLB debut and looked the part.  With eight strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings pitched, Bibee is going to be hard to send back to Columbus if this keeps up.  Logan Allen and Bibee both gave a jolt to the Guards in their first major-league starts on the verge of sweeps; that’s impressive.

2 – Guards, this time, score first as the lineup warms up. 

Finally, the Guards got out to a lead against the Rockies as Josh Naylor set the tone with his first-inning home run; very good to see.  Naylor, Gimenez, Ramirez, and Gonzalez all had two hits today; that is a good sign for our lineup.  All four last year had multiple big at-bats to win games, the Guards need this group to be productive again in 2023.

3 – Eli Morgan and his 0.00 ERA

Morgan is having a strong start to the 2023 season with seven appearances already and no earned runs given up so far.  If this keeps up, Eli Morgan could be the 7th and 8th-inning guy getting the call as he can go multiple innings.  

Game Summary

The Cleveland Guardians avoided a three-game sweep by defeating the Colorado Rockies 4-1 on Wednesday, with Tanner Bibee making an impressive major league debut. The 24-year-old right-hander was called up from Triple-A Columbus before the game and struck out eight batters, giving up only one run over 5 2/3 innings. He allowed six hits, threw 91 pitches, and received a loud ovation from the crowd of 9,841 as he walked to the dugout. Injuries to Triston McKenzie and Aaron Civale forced the Guardians to turn to their top minor league prospects, including Logan Allen, who also won his major league debut last Sunday.

Josh Naylor hit a two-run homer in the first, and Oscar Gonzalez had an RBI double in the fourth for Cleveland. Rockies right-hander Germán Márquez was removed from the game with two outs in the fourth due to right forearm inflammation. Emanuel Clase picked up his eighth save in the ninth to secure the win for Cleveland. The Guardians will decide in the next few days whether Bibee will get another start.
