Post-Game Recap

3 Things Around The Game

1 – WILD 9TH INNING PART 1

After multiple errors by Cleveland in the 9th inning, Will Brennan ended the game with a walk-off three-run home run!!

Brennan got up after Josh Naylor was intentionally walked, and Andres Gimenez was on second after he walked. Still, he nearly ended the inning after he overran second base, almost getting picked off, but was able to duck underneath the tag.  Gimenez was at first called out, but after replay, it was overturned.

2 – WILD 9TH INNING PART 2

The Guardians had the lead heading into the 9th with close Emmanual Clase in to get the save, but it got a little wild after the first two outs as he did not get help with his defense. With a runner on first, Brayan Rocchio got a ground ball, but instead of throwing to first, he ran to second, trying to beat out Byron Buxton, but he did not. The Guards did go to replay, and it appeared Buxton was out, but the call stood.

The next batter, Alex Kirilloff, hit a grounder to Josh Naylor, who tossed it to Clase, who promptly dropped the ball.  After a botched attempt to get Buxton in a rundown, Buxton scores to tie the game at two.

3 – Bibee Brilliant

Tanner Bibee was excellent on Sunday going seven strong with eight strikeouts only giving up one run on four hits.

Game Summary

Will Brennan hit a three-run homer off Jhoan Duran with two outs in a dramatic ninth inning, securing a 5-2 victory for the Cleveland Guardians over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday.

The inning nearly ended when Andrés Giménez was initially called out at second base while advancing on a wild pitch. However, a video review initiated by the crew chief overturned the call, ruling him safe. Josh Naylor was then intentionally walked to bring up Brennan, who delivered the game-winning homer.

Minnesota, trailing 2-1 with two outs and no one on base in the ninth, managed to tie the game without a hit against All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase (3-1). Ryan Jeffers was hit by a pitch, Willi Castro reached on a fielder’s choice, and pinch-runner Byron Buxton scored from second when Clase dropped Naylor’s throw on a potential game-ending grounder by Alex Kirilloff.

Giménez had earlier hit a two-run homer in the first inning, as the AL Central-leading Guardians swept the Twins for the second time this season, outscoring them 19-8 in the three-game series at Progressive Field.

Jose Miranda hit a solo homer off Tanner Bibee in the third inning for Minnesota, which has now lost a season-high six straight games. Miranda was the only Twins player to advance past second base until the ninth inning.

Bibee pitched seven innings, allowing four hits, striking out eight, and walking one. Despite his solid performance, he remains winless in five starts since April 27.

Twins starter Chris Paddack also pitched well, allowing three hits and two runs over a career-high eight innings, striking out six with 100 pitches.

Before the game, Minnesota recalled right-hander Caleb Boushley from Triple-A St. Paul and designated Jay Jackson for assignment after Jackson posted a 6.85 ERA in 17 relief appearances.

UP NEXT

Ben Lively (2-2, 3.06 ERA) takes on Mets RHP Tylor Megill (0-1, 2.25 ERA) in the opener of a three-game home series Monday.
