Andres Gimenez had a big night going 3 for 4 with the game-winning 2-run home run in the bottom of the 5th! Gimenez also had two doubles on Friday night.
Starter Logan Allen had a strong outing going six innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs, bouncing back from his defeat to the same White Sox in his last start.
In another bizarre reversal call from New York, Brayan Rocchio appeared to hit a double, but on a second look, Tim Anderson for Chicago placed the tag on Rocchio and pushed his hand off the bag, which is not allowed. The officials in New York ended up calling Rocchio out, and a confused Terry Francona came out to discuss, did not like the response from the umpires, got upset, and was ejected from the game. Good for Francona, it was a terrible call, and Anderson pushed his hand off the bag.
Andrés Giménez smashed a two-run home run, part of his career-best trio of extra-base hits, while rookie Logan Allen secured his first home victory in over three months. On Friday night, the Cleveland Guardians triumphed over the Chicago White Sox with a 4-2 score.
Giménez battled through the fifth-inning at-bat, initially attempting to lay down a bunt to advance Steven Kwan to second base. After fouling off the first two pitches, he changed his strategy and connected with a fastball from Mike Clevinger (4-5), sending it soaring into the right-field stands to break the 2-2 tie.
Giménez shared, grinning, “My aim was to move Kwan, but the plan didn’t unfold as intended. So, you keep persevering. We’re fortunate to have a talented young core of players who are ready to step up. We’re here to support them too.”
In a six-inning performance, Logan Allen (5-4) conceded four hits and two runs, ending a six-start win drought at Progressive Field. The left-handed pitcher struck out five and walked four, finally securing a home victory since his major league debut against Miami on April 23.
Emmanuel Clase sealed the deal with his 29th save in the ninth inning, tying him with Baltimore’s Felix Bautista for the AL lead.
Allen reflected, “I managed to adjust my approach and keep a few surprises in my pocket. Gimmy’s hitting was solid, and it turned into a fantastic team victory.”
José Ramírez drove in a run with a single in the opening inning, and Giménez contributed with two doubles, crossing the plate twice for the Guardians. The team returned from a challenging 2-5 road trip that left them trailing first-place Minnesota by 2 1/2 games in the AL Central.
The White Sox scored both of their runs in the third inning, with their initial five batters reaching base. Trayce Thompson was brought home by Elvis Andrus’ double, and Andrew Benintendi drew a bases-loaded walk before Allen secured three consecutive outs.
Chicago manager Pedro Grifol noted, “We did manage to draw some walks against him early on, but we also found ourselves chasing with the bases loaded. After that inning, Allen displayed some impressive work.”
Andrew Vaughn contributed a 2-for-4 performance for the White Sox, who now face a five-game losing streak and find themselves 25 games below .500 for the first time since the conclusion of the 2018 season.
Clevinger’s outing spanned five innings, during which he conceded four runs, three of them earned. The right-handed pitcher managed two strikeouts.
Clevinger remarked, “I wasn’t at my best, and they’re a determined lineup.” He had previously played a role in Cleveland’s journey to the 2016 World Series.
Earlier in the day, the Guardians placed first baseman, Josh Naylor, on the 10-day injured list due to a right oblique strain. Naylor, boasting a .306 batting average along with 15 home runs and a team-leading 79 RBIs, is expected to be sidelined for 3-6 weeks.
A crowd of 37,056 attended the game, marking Cleveland’s fifth sold-out event of the season.
