On Monday, it was reported by the AP that current Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell has interviewed with the club. Counsell was the Marlins hitter who broke our hearts in 1997 and hit the game-tying sacrifice fly in the 9th inning off of Jose Mesa. Counsell would later score the game-winning run in the 11th.
Counsell’s contract runs out on Tuesday the 31st with the Brewers, and Counsell is also rumored to be of interest to the New York Mets.
Counsell would be great in Cleveland; my fingers are crossed that he selects the Guardians. He understands the mid-market challenges, has brought Milwaukee consistent success, and will want to win immediately.
Before Counsell’s interview yesterday, from reports, it sounded like Stephen Vogt was the favorite, as he completed a second interview. Vogt was a big league catcher for ten seasons and is currently the Mariners bullpen coach and quality control coach.
3 – What is next?
There has been a long list of candidates who have applied and been interviewed, but the Guardians with Counsell is something to watch for now. Once Counsell selects a team, which might be Cleveland, the manager’s search will either accelerate or end with Counsell managing the Guardians.
Other hot rumors of possible names to fill the job are Andy Green, John McDonald, and Carlos Mendoza among the many.
